westwater
2017
This architectural technology project was a Hall of Celebration in Callan Park. The west-facing site posed many challenges, especially for lighting and the outdoor event space. The building needed to prevent unpleasant afternoon glare but maintain sightlines over the water.
The building’s simple but effective design incorporates passive heating, lighting, and ventilation strategies to maintain comfort levels. The primary feature is the western façade of vertical louvres which prevent glare but are offset to retain views. The geometry of the sawtooth roof over the indoor event space allows winter sun to warm up the room but blocks out summer sun to prevent overheating. Additionally, the skillion roof over the outdoor event area facilitates rainwater harvesting.
