antihouse

2017

In this residential design project, we asked the question ‘How much space do two people really need?’

The 9m by 30m site, an existing three-storey canal house in The Hague, sits in the middle of a mixed-use street, and is decidedly too big for the clients, an old couple, to live in and maintain.

The design breaks the interior spaces into minimised modules and the rooms are reduced to the smallest functional areas. The leftover area is returned to nature and the community, allowing the site to be overrun with greenery and communal gardens.

This scheme also addresses the unique requirements of the clients, one of whom is a blind judge - the unique landscaping and plant aromas facilitate the judge's navigation throughout the house.

A key deliverable for this project was a photorealistic 1:20 model of the final design. Photos of this model are presented below.
