parramatta watering hole
2018
Pools should strive to be places which facilitate the celebration of water and its relationship with our bodies.
The closure of Parramatta’s War Memorial Swimming Pool in 2017 left an immense need for aquatic facilities, especially considering the region’s growing size and economy. This project examines the rich relationships Australians have with natural and man-made bodies of water, and the pool’s form, footprint, and circulation all uphold the celebration of water.
The structural design component of this project utilises the unique efficiency and qualities of the catenary form. The roof’s catenary profile at once spans the large internal distances and contributes to the building’s dynamism and architectural intent. The building thus embodies a tectonic approach, where the structural and architectural intents work in unison.
