This project is for an entry building into the University of Sydney campus from Victoria Park. Programmatically, the building is composed of a gallery space and a dining area, both of which respond to changing light conditions throughout a day and a year. The changing intensity of shadows throughout the building also relates to the various usages of each interior space.
The building’s long, linear form serves to underline the linearity of light. In particular, during the equinox, a beam of light can travel unimpeded from corner to corner through the building, effectively slicing the internal space in half diagonally.
The building’s green roof can be seen from the Law Building above, and evokes the image of a narrow strip of earth being lifted from the ground.
